As parents and concerned citizens try to navigate the quagmire that is
public education today, there are groups/companies that we at CEN would
caution you to "Steer Clear" of. For instance, David Klein, professor
of mathematics at California State University, Northridge, highlights
the millions of dollars arguably wasted by the National Science
Foundation (NSF) on grants given to groups to write non-rigorous math
curricula, as outlined here:
http://www.csun.edu/~vcmth00m/nsf.html Should a math textbook which contains the following language, e.g.,
"This material is based upon work supported by the National Science
Foundation under Grant No. ESI-9252984..," be suspect? Other companies
and foundations routinely support programs that do not help students
learn, and in fact, may be contributing to their non-education. We've
started a list of such organizations below, along with information which
highlights why we are concerned. Read for yourself and decide if you,
too, should be concerned.
